The
Education Department offers three publications free of charge to classroom
teachers. These multi-disciplinary books provide hands-on activities and
information in a form that students will readily enjoy. All three books

The Journal
of Samuel Mills
Students follow Samuel
from his farm in New York to the whaling town of New Bedford where he
signs aboard a whaler. Throughout Samuel’s voyage, students will
chart his course on a map, calculate distance traveled, learn shipboard
life, fill in missing journal entries and determine the ventures’
final profits. Designed as 15 separate lessons, The Journal will sharpen
students’ math, reading, science, social studies and critical thinking
skills.
Molly Watkins
and the Secret of the South Jetty
Molly Watkins finds a
mysterious object while beachcombing. Through her research at the Columbia
River Maritime Museum and correspondence with her kindly old Uncle Jasper,
a former lighthouse keeper, she discovers what the item is. Along the
way, Molly and the reader are introduced to the Graveyard of the Pacific,
shipwrecks, lighthouses, the history of the Columbia River, the science
of why boats float, the U.S. Coastguard and the importance of museums.
Designed as 15 activity-filled lessons, this book will sharpen students’
reading, science, math, history and critical thinking skills.
Nicholas
Finch on the Trail of Discovery
Nicholas travels with
his parents to visit sites along the Lewis and Clark Trail in Oregon and
Washington. Through Nicholas’s journal entries, and those of Lewis
and Clark, the reader is introduced to Northwest history, science, the
impact and importance of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, and how things
have changed along the trail. This activity book has 15 activities including:
designing a canoe, studying about tides, learning to count in Chinook,
and making a quadrant.
